Techie Talkie: Current Use of Java Development
- By Warner Wong

After 2+ years of Java hype, Java owns a good part of the IT development realm. So what exactly is it being used? In brevity, the statistics shows the following:

69% Browser Applets
54% Full-function business applications
33% Helper Applications used to access legacy systems
6% Other use

Why is Java not as prominent as it ought to be? One setback source may be caused by Microsoft. Java itself is not just a programming language, but an entire operating system. Therefore, Java becomes a threat to Microsoft's core business of operating system. Microsoft's vision is to have every computer running a version of its operating system. With the introduction of Java, Microsoft may have decided to launch its J++ equivalent and take control to veer off Java's path.

To cut to the chase, the IT industry now regards Java as a programming language to solve and enhance business needs. Steve Rovell of Dynamic Consortium, an application development consultant and solutions provider, indicated that Java development programs should be aware of the fact that Java is still a young language, with limitations. For example, It may not have the number of
functionality of C++ and all of the applications written in C++.

Java has yet to pick up its momentum in most of the mission-critical projects, such as ATM and banking transactions, etc. Yet some small firms such as Neutron, developed a completely Java-based client application and for host web site of billing, shipping, receiving, and retrieval of inventory information.

However, it will not be a doubt that Java will eventually be deployed for the mission-critical applications in the enterprise world.

Statistics of organizational programming languages used currently are as follows:

73% Visual Basic
55% Visual C++
45% C++ (non-Visual C++)
35% C
32% COBOL
29% Java (non-Visual J++)
25% Other languages/programming environments
20% Visual J++
